The University of Milano - Bicocca (http://www.unimib.it/) was established in 1998 in response to an increasing number of students and to the demand of new opportunities of study and research coming from the territory of the Region Lombardia. The University is situated in an area called Bicocca, on the northern outskirts of Milan, and it stands on what was once the industrial site of the world known Pirelli tyre company. The University is part of a new urban center, which also includes the CNR (National Research Council), Pneumatici Pirelli, multinational company offices, the new headquarters of Pirelli Group, the Arcimboldi Theatre, sport centers and shops. With 8 faculties (Economics; Mathematic, Physical and Natural Sciences; Statistic sciences; Sociology; Vocational Training Sciences; Law; Medicine and Surgery; Psychology), 39 first level Degree Programmes, 30 second level Degree Programmes and about 30.000 students (12% of Lombardia), the University of Milano - Bicocca is the fourth university pole of the Region. The postgraduate offer, consisting of 15 first level and 3 second level Masters, 10 Specialization Degree Programmes, 25 PhD Programmes and 33 Specialization Schools, completes and enriches the strategic aim of the University to form highly specialized professional figures. The University of Milano Bicocca has a campus which is open to everyone, not only students. It has at its disposal large open spaces, large lecture rooms, study areas, equipped laboratories, specialized libraries, and a well equipped central library. Its assembly hall can seat 1.100 people, and also acts as a reference point for meeting and seminars organized by local economic and social foundations.
Despite its short history, University of Milano Bicocca has a significant role in the international scientific community. This becomes quite evident especially if one takes into account that most of the researchers and scientists at Bicocca began or carried out long periods of research at other universities, principally the Università degli Studi and Politecnico of Milan. Having academic staff from these particular backgrounds, it is clear that the University of Milano Bicocca realizes the importance of international research and has quickly embraced European research and training programmes. From the outset the University began to participate in the Socrates-Erasmus programme encouraging students and staff of the benefits of having common curricula with other universities. One comes into contact with the international climate of the University at many different levels, i.e the participation of researchers in international research projects (whether alone or under national research Institutes like INFN and INFM), the hundreds of publications professors and researchers publish in specialized international journals, the organization of International PHD research programmes in collaboration with foreign universities. Moreover, thanks to European Union financing and to University support, students are becoming more and more mobile. They are now graduating and being awarded PHD degrees in European and foreign universities. |
