Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca

The University of Milano - Bicocca was established in 1998 as answer to the increasing number of students and to the demand of new opportunities of study and research coming from the territory of the Region Lombardia.

The University is situated in an area called Bicocca, on the northern outskirts of Milan, and it stands on what was once the industrial site of the world known Pirelli tyre company.

The University is part of a new urban center, in which others are taking part, too: the CNR (National Research Council), Pneumatici Pirelli, multinational company offices, the new headquarters of Pirelli Group, the Arcimboldi Theatre, sport centers and shops.

With its 8 faculties (Economics; Mathematic, Physical and Natural Sciences; Statistic sciences; Sociology; Vocational Training Sciences; Law; Medicine and Surgery; Psychology), its 39 first level Degree Programmes, its 30 second level Degree Programmes and about 30.000 students (12% of Lombardia), today the University of Milano - Bicocca is the fourth university pole of the Region.

The postgraduate offer, consisting of 15 first level and 3 second level Masters, 10 Specialization Degree Programmes, 25 PhD Programmes and 33 Specialization Schools, completes and enriches the strategic aim of the University to form high specialized professional figures, as it is more and more requested by the market.
The University of Milano Bicocca has a campus which is open to everyone, not only students. It has at its disposal large open spaces, large lecture rooms, study areas, equipped laboratories, specialized libraries, and a well equipped central library.

Its assembly hall can seat 1.100 people, and also acts as a reference point for meeting and seminars organized by local economic and social foundations.

PRIMM

BIOTECHNOLOGY SERVICES
During its first ten years of life, Primm has become the leading Italian company in the area of biotechnology services, and several qualified industrial and academic laboratories in Europe and the United States have chosen Primm as their partner for selected biotechnological services.
In order to stay at the forefront of the technological and scientific evolution of research activities, Primm is always investing in new technical processes and in the automation of the manufacturing steps.
Through our internal know-how, and a broad and heterogeneous portfolio of research tools and services, we can efficiently complement the research activities of the customers, providing reliable and cost-effective technical solutions.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
Primm has grown not only as a service company but, having a strong experience in industrial R&D, it has also invested its own resources in selected projects with potential industrial outcome.
Through Primm's efforts, specific projects are brought to an appropriate level of maturation where joint ventures with larger industrial partners can be established.
In the past few years, several R&D projects in different areas have been carried out in close collaboration with important Italian and international companies and academic institutions. Peptides are used to investigate problems such as the ligand-receptor interactions or to study the tridimensional structure of specific protein domains.
In many cases, it is also possible to design synthetic peptides which display the same or similar biochemical and biological properties.
With this respect, one of Primm's main focus has been the design, synthesis and pharmaceutical development of novel bioactive peptides for various therapeutical applications.
Computer-assisted molecular modelling is used to gain structural information and to design novel and innovative peptide molecules, which could display a desired biological activity for further pharmaceutical development.
Some of these projects have led to the filing and acquisition of relevant patents and now are in pre-clinical phases. Peptides have a broad range of potential clinical benefits, with applications in some of the most dire and prevalent disase categories. At present, Primm's main therapeutic areas of interests are in inflammation, asthma and infectious diseases.

Another relevant area of R&D activity is related to the development of recombinant strains and technologies for the industrial production of biopharmaceuticals, which is also performed in collaboration with important industrial partners. In the last few years, Primm has developed efficient technologies for the manufacturing of selected recombinant proteins in heterologous systems.
